| Pregnancy Massage
A woman's body undergoes significant changes during the 40 weeks of pregnancy. These physical changes are the result of hormonal changes as well as the growth of the fetus. The external changes only give a hint of the profound internal transformation which is taking place. Consider just a few of these:

The uterus increases 5-6 times in size and about 20 times in weight by the end of the pregnancy.
Maternal blood volume gradually increases 35%-50%.
Cardiac output increases 30%-60%.
There is a 15%-20% increase in oxygen consumption and the respiratory rate increases to meet this need.
*Kisner and Colby, 1990
Massage is used to help the pregnant woman feel more comfortable throughout the pregnancy. This is accomplished by managing common muscular complaints and other symptoms. Massage can play an important role in preventing potential problems from occurring. This can include helping to resolve "weak spots" and preparing you body for labor by assisting in keeping the body in top physical condition. Since pregnancy can also be a very emotional and stressful period in a woman's life, emotional support and relaxation may be vital elements in treatment.
